Last week I was given the opportunity to be part of something incredibly special. The maiden flight of the RIMOWAF13 – also known as Junkers F13 by RIMOWA. If you know me or have been reading my blog for a little longer you might know what a huge aviation fan I am. That is why I nearly cried when a very exciting invitation arrived at my doorsteps. RIMOWA (a brand I’ve been admiring for years, by the way) asked if I wanted to join them in celebrating the RIMOWAF13 project in Zurich. And seriously, how could I not say yes, yes & YES?
The Event | Celebrating the maiden flight of the RIMOWAF13
So on Thursday morning I stepped on a plane towards Zurich for two fun days with RIMOWA, Julia from Chic Choolee and Julia from BBPr. It all felt very surreal but little did I know how exciting the trip would eventually turn out to be. After a quick lunch and wardrobe change at the hotel (Kameha Grand Zurich), we finally headed towards the Airforce Center Dübendorf where we’d get the chance to see the Junkers F13 fly for the very first time.
At the hotel, we were picked up by gorgeous vintage cars and brought to the party location. When we arrived I might or might not have let out a squeal of excitement. The whole party was 20’s themed. As F.Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favourite authors EVER this was heaven on earth for me. In general, the party reminded me so much of Gatsby – I loved every single thing about that. What a great idea!
The Plane | Junkers F13
Then it was time. Time to witness the RIMOWAF13 descend into the air. When RIMOWA CEO Dieter Morszeck and his co-pilot stepped into their open-cabin aircraft, the crowd was holding its breath. Flying this baby doesn’t compare to any other airplane. At least that’s what they said. I obviously didn’t fly it myself, duh! A crowd of 200 or so people – mostly journalists and PR people from all over the world – were standing on the ground, watching them glide across the sky in awe. When the machine took off I was holding my breath, had goosebumps all over my body and was in a state of pure joy. There’s nothing like seeing others follow their passion and fulfill their dream.
The original Junkers F13 took off for the first time in 1919 and revolutionized aircraft construction and formed the foundation of modern air travel. This one is new. However, apart from a few technical modifications that were made to match modern flight standards, it’s the same aircraft. Re-built. 100 years later. Revolutionizing once again. And oh what a gorgeous plane it is.
The Highlight | Sight-seeing flight with the JU52
After an amazing party with delicious food, we headed back to the hotel because we desperately needed a good nights sleep for our flight with the JU52 the next day. We were the first to start and scheduled to depart at 9 am. Not gonna lie, when I first stepped onto the plane I thought, “holy shit what kind of situation have I gotten myself in again”.[one_half]However, once the plane took off I was mesmerized.
Flying in the JU52 wasn’t like any lame old flight in a “normal” passenger aircraft.
It was different. Loud. Shaky. Frightening. Tight. Hot. And absolutely magical.
We were able to experience 30 minutes of REAL flying. 30 minutes of time travel. 30 minutes of pure joy and gratitude. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this free in my entire life even though there was absolutely no leg space, whatsoever.
Oh, did I already mention that I LOVE flying?
Thoughts | The magic of aviation
I can honestly say that these two days in Zurich have been one of the most magical and inspiring ones of my life (thus far). I cannot put into words how grateful I am to have been part of this project. To have witnessed RIMOWA bring back the magic of aviation. To honor a plane, that back in the 20s significantly shaped the future of aviation and travel.
Flying was always a biƒrimowag passion of mine. When I was younger and people asked me what kind of superpower I’d like to have I always said “flying” – that’s the dream, isn’t it? And I honestly think that aviation is one of the most important and admirable things mankind has achieved. WE CAN BLOODY FLY GUYS! Do you even realize/appreciate that? Airplanes aren’t lame coaches traveling in the air. They’re so much more. To me, there always is magic in aviation. However, having experienced the Junkers fly across the sky, I can see why some people say it’s not the same anymore. And I’m happy someone took up this project and wants to bring the magic back. Cheers to the dreamers!
RIMOWAF13 | My FMA Video
If you want to, you can have a look at my FMA Video. It’s in German but if you don’t understand that you can just turn the volume off and watch it anyways. There’s lots of material featuring our flight in the JU52 and the incredible maiden flight of the F13. Of course, I’d love to hear your feedback on the video and would highly appreciate a thumbs up and subscribe :)
What do think about this project? Do you think aviation has lost its magic? And what do you think about the brand new Junkers F13 from RIMOWA?
A very special thank you goes out to RIMOWA & Julia/BBPr for inviting Miss Getaway to be part of this incredibly special day. The opinion expressed in this post is, as always, 100% my own!
