In the past couple of weeks I’ve encountered various “ironic” texts about how to become a successful blogger and saw a lot of my colleagues complaining about certain standards being required for blog success. “In order to become a successful fashion blogger you need to be thin, beautiful, rich and live in an exciting city“, one of them stated. When I read through these kind of posts I’m always startled by the fact that these girls really feel like they’re failing due to them not fitting into a certain niche.
But that’s not what blogging is all about. Never has been and probably also never will be. Sure, being rich always helps. Doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to become a professional blogger, studying or simply trying to live your life. But to me all these other things do not make you a successful or good blogger. And it certainly isn’t your weight or your mediocre face that’s holding you back from succeeding.
Because in the end the only thing that keeps us from blog success really is our mindset.
I can tell myself day and night that I’m too fat to succeed or that nobody is going to read my blog because I’m not rich and living the fancy life. And this negative mindset will then influence my actions and make me frustrated. Yes, of course I also sometimes dream about living in London (because that’s the dream, isn’t it) or complain about all the Austrian blogger events always happening in Vienna. Yes, maybe I am naive but I honestly think that living in Graz doesn’t influence my chances of succeeding as blogger at all!
Now let’s talk about appearances. Sure the blogging industry, especially if you decide to focus on fashion, often is very superficial. But isn’t charisma and character more important than a pretty face? I for my part only ever follow bloggers when their personality also appeals to me and I find them likable. You can be the prettiest gal around but if you’re an awful person, who’s gonna follow you then?
So, to me, in order to have “blog success” you do not need to be rich, thin and beautiful. You need to be original, fun, have a great character and spark my interest. Do whatever floats your boat, find your niche, dress however you like and don’t let society pressure you into thinking that you need to lose weight to succeed because that is utter nonsense. The grass is always greener and just because you lose ten pounds you’re not automatically going to be more successful or happy (except you’re trying to promote a weight loss product, then it might be helpful of course).
Also I’d like to state that to me being a successful blogger doesn’t mean earning millions (even though I obviously wouldn’t say no to that), jet-setting around the world, being famous and appearing at all the events. To me blog success shows in managing to get your message across, help others, being in a constant exchange with readers, to inspire and get inspired. And if any of you girls out there might think that you’re never going to be a successful blogger because you’re not a size zero or can’t afford designer handbags then let me tell you that it’s not true. Just as people, success comes in all shapes, colors and sizes and as long as you do whatever floats your boat and makes you happy you’re also gonna be successful.
So please can we stop the whining already? Kick yourself in the ass, think positive and do whatever you want to do and blog success / positivity will come your way. Constantly complaining about not being as successful as you’d like to be won’t make your life any easier and shading on other bloggers who are thin, beautiful and rich won’t make you more successful. So if you think you’re not succeeding just because you don’t fit the stereotype of an influencer then PLEASE do yourself and us the favour and start taking up a more positive approach on things because in the end blogging should be FUN!
What do you think about blog success having to do with appearance? Are you as sick and tired of these kind of complaints as I am?
