How To Set Goals and Actually Achieve Them

To me, September is the perfect time for a reboot. Blame it on 13 or so years in the school system but September feels more like a new year than January 1st ever does. Therefore, what I like to do in September is to revisit my goals for the year, adjust them and maybe set new ones for the rest of 2016. And because I’ve been doing just that for the past 22 years of my life (well, let’s say 10) I thought I’d share my tips and tricks on how to set goals and actually achieve them with you.


REVISIT AND RE-EVALUATE OLD GOALS:  First you’ll want to look back at your new years’ resolutions. How many did you achieve by now? Are they still important to you? Anything you need to add/change? New ones that came up during the past few weeks?

WRITE DOWN YOUR (NEW) GOALS: This one is super important. In order to actually achieve your goals you absolutely need to write them down. No matter how small, grab a piece of paper and write it down. It’s best to do that in your agenda or some other place that you can refer back to after some time.

BE PRECISE: The biggest problem most people have with setting and achieving their goals is actually the way they formulate them. You gotta be precise. “Read more” just won’t do. Be precise and clear with what you want to achieve.

ALWAYS HAVE YOUR GOALS IN MIND: What we tend to do is getting overexcited at the beginning of a new month. “I wanna do this, I wanna do that“. After a couple of weeks, however, we slowly but surely completely forget about the goals we set. Your goal is to read at least one book per month? Write that down. Buy the book and place it on your bedside table. Never lose sight of that goal and you’ll easily achieve it.

BABY STEPS: Break your goals up into small, manageable steps that you can reach easily. You won’t be able to conquer the world in a day or two. First you gotta do this, then you gotta do that. In the end, you’ll eventually come closer and closer to ruling them all. (Or you find that one ring, that might do as well)
