It’s Saturday night. I’m home alone, sipping on my already lukewarm tea while reading a new book. Every once in a while I open the Instagram app on my phone and instantly get hit with a flash of envy. Theoretically, I am as happy as I’ve ever been at the moment. Absolutely content with my life. But then, there’s this nagging fear of failing at life because I’m not going on a fancy vacation this summer.
I honestly and truly believe that the message that big influencers and bloggers are sending out today, is somewhat toxic. Because let’s be real here. For a 20-something, flying to the Maldives or Bali isn’t something that we can do so easily. It takes months of saving, weeks of hard work, way too little coffee dates and a hella lot of determination to be able to afford a fancy vacation for a “normal person”.
I didn’t grow up rich. In fact, my family never had that much money. We were a normal middle-class family and going on a fancy vacation meant driving 2-5 hours to either Italy or Croatia, where we’d rent an apartment for a couple of days. 5-star hotels were alien to me before I started blogging and I only boarded my first flight at the age of 18. Then, I had saved months to be able to afford that trip to Berlin with my friend and it was a once in a lifetime experience for me.
When Instagram makes you want to go on a fancy vacation
When you open your Instagram app, though, and you see so many (very) young women jetting around the world – Hawaii, LA, the Maldives, Marrakech and South Africa – you easily get irritated. Should I be able to go on a fancy vacation too? Why am I stuck in Austria all summer while they all are living their best lives? Am I neglecting my duty of enjoying life to the fullest because I cannot go on a trip like that too?
I would be lying if I’d say I haven’t been searching for flights lately. I desperately wanted to leave the country one last time in August before I start working full-time in September. I constantly felt like I NEEDED to do this now. In reality, I do not really want to go on a fancy vacation this summer. I had so much fun on our road trip in July and enjoying life to the fullest, while also working on my Bachelor’s thesis and trying to finish university before the year is over. Last year I did way more traveling than this year. And that’s okay.
However, there’s this constant fear of missing out. And if you ever felt like that too, let me tell you one thing….
YOU ARE NOT FAILING IF YOU DON’T GO ON A FANCY VACATION THIS SUMMER
There, hopefully, are many summers to come and we do not always have to do what everyone else is doing. Traveling is bloody expensive and it’s okay to not be able to live your life the same way these big influencers are doing. This isn’t what life really looks like. Life isn’t all glitter and glamour and jetting around the world. For the majority of us, at least.
You can also have a wonderful time in your home country this summer. No fancy vacation needed!
Do you also experience FOMO when you’re browsing through your Instagram feed? And please tell me I’m not the only 20-something not able to afford a two-week yoga retreat in Bali?
**Big thank you to my dear friend Lisa for taking these gorgeous pictures of me in my favorite dress ♥
