Hilmteich Graz: Into The Green

at home

Remember my you don’t have to go far blogpost? Well, this one could be seen as some kind of part 2 in the “series”. I’m not gonna lie to you – I’m suffering from a severe case of wanderlust at the moment. If I wouldn’t have to attend the Latin course, go to work and do all my other stupid daily chores you’d see me sitting in a plane heading somewhere new… However, sadly real-life is a thing and leaves me no opportunity to leave Austria at the moment. Well, at least I’m heading to Vienna for a 2 day trip on Tuesday YAY! DSC_0260

The Hilmteich in Graz

Ever since I moved to Graz people told me that I just have to visit Hilmteich. But for some reason I wasn’t able to do so until Friday. And oh my god I so much regret not going there before. I intentionally decided not to edit the pictures in any way so you can see how magical and atmospheric this place looks like in “reality”. Ok no, I guess you have to go there and see for yourself – the pictures really don’t do justice! All the greenery made the little pond appear somewhat like a magical forest kind of place and that gorgeous building you see on the first picture… well, it’s a restaurant/interior shop and one of the most amazing and majestic buildings I’ve ever seen.

We had the most delicious cake and homemade ice-tea at the restaurant (Purberg) while watching ducks and fish swimming in the pond, people enjoying the sun and walking around it… If you’re interested in what the food looked like you should check out the picture I uploaded on Instagram (here & here) – duh, I want another one now!

When I talk to people from Vienna or other “big” cities they always tell me how boring they find Graz. But honestly, I really can’t agree with them. Sure it’s not New York and duh, we don’t even have a Starbucks here! But I couldn’t be any happier about choosing to live here – it has all the advantages of a big city but still remains full of charm and history. There are so many wonderful places like the Hilmteich rather near and the old-town is one of the most amazing ones I’ve ever seen. I mean isn’t it incredible how it only takes you 5 minutes to go from the city centre (looking rather grey-ish with all its concrete streets and high buildings) to a green oasis full of nature, peace and magic?

Have you ever been to the Hilmteich or Graz? Do you love strolls through nature as much as I do?

It’s funny how life can just get in the way of simple things like going for a walk! So glad you could go though, it looks like a really beautiful place to be! Lovely post :)

I also suffer from wanderlust, but I’ve become so busy in the last few years that it has been hard to enjoy my life. Hopefully I can have a bit of a break next year.

    Hello Kerstin,

the Hilmteich looks really like a pretty place!

I have only been to Graz for business trips yet.

But I am lucky to live in Vienna in a place at the border of the city, I can walk 10 minutes and be in the wineyards, which is wonderful now in autumn!

Have a great time in Vienna,
    ciao Markus

Graz looks really picturesque and I really guess it depends on what people define as boring. For some a big city might be boring because it is lacking the exciting nature that a small town has. I do not know if I could personally live in a smaller city, because I really need the hustle and bustle, but I also love nature and quainter places as well. I am all about doing mini vacations in your own backyard too when possible. Everytime I go to west Berlin, I automatically feel like I am on holiday because Ku’damm resembles richer German cities than the east of Berlin where I live and usually hang out. Have fun in Vienna! I just came back from visiting friends there a little over a week ago :) It is such a beautiful city.
