These days being a feminist isn’t always that easy. More often than not people misinterpret the concept of feminism as being a men-hating lesbian who never wears bras and likes to show off their hairy feet and armpits. But that’s not what feminism is about at all! Do I hate all men? NO! Do I hate bras? Well sometimes. Do I have hairy feet and armpits? Ew NO! And am I a lesbian? NO!
When I started this blog I made myself promise that it won’t be another shallow outfit diary or superficial place for pretty pictures. I always wanted to stand up for a cause, be myself and talk about important topics on here. So that is why for today’s Sunday Chat Column I decided to write about a topic that is very dear to my heart.
Why I am a feminist:
I am a feminist because I have the right to fair payment! Duh, it’s 2016 and gender pay gap is still a thing. I personally think that we should all be paid equally for our work. Why the hell would I earn 25% less than my male co-worker for the same amount and effort of work? (That’s the data for Austria at least!)
I am a feminist because I did NOT ask for it! Justifying rape is one of the worst things that ever happened to mankind. It doesn’t matter whether I go out butt-naked, do my morning run when it’s still dark outside or have a drink too much – that doesn’t allow anyone to touch me against my will. After the horrible attacks on new years eve in Cologne people started to give tips like, “oh you women shouldn’t go out alone.” What about you guys start to respect women and keep your hands to yourself unless someone specifically allows you to touch them?
I am a feminist because socially constructed norms suck! Just because I am a woman that doesn’t mean that I love skirts, the color pink, want to have a family and do the household. Patriarchal society definitely needs a break and we need to start encouraging women to do their thing whether that means staying at home and caring for the kids or going out into the business world and becoming the CEO of some major company.
I am a feminist because so many women gave their everything for a little equality. In the past many brave and courageous women gave their everything and lives for this cause. They gave us the right to vote, to work and to study. So why would we stop now? We need to carry on fighting for equality because we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated equally.
I am a feminist because it is the right thing to do!!
There are many more reasons for why I consider myself a feminist but stating them all would basically turn this post into an endless list. I personally think that feminism is very important for us all, not just women, and that we should carry on fighting for equality for everyone. There are many branches of feminism and it can be interpreted in so many ways. For me, however, being a feminist means standing up for myself, not being ashamed of being from “the weaker sex”, pursuing my dreams, being treated equally, being respected and not having to be afraid of going out alone.
What do you think about feminism? Would you call yourself a feminist? And why do you think being a feminist is important these days? Let’s discuss in the comments below :)
