Catchy title, huh? Fun fact: I’m selfish. Sad? Yes, but also very much true. This brings me into a really big emotional dilemma because on the one hand do I want to save the environment and all the cute animals that inhabit it. But on the other hand am I way too egoistic to give up on the foods I love, such as Tiramisu, Lasagna and Cheese. Don’t look at me like that, I already admitted of being selfish.
Anyway… back to topic. I feel like sustainability is in everybody’s mind nowadays and there are a million posts on how to live more eco-friendly. A few days ago I went through some of them and I found it quite interesting that I’m doing almost all of the mentioned things. Just not intentionally to save the earth. Mostly it’s because I want to save money. :D That’s when it hit me: by being an egoist and my aversion to spending money on stupid things are actually helping the environment. So… here are 5 ways to save the environment by being selfish.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: I know, I know. It can be an absolute pain to use the bus/train to go to work everyday. However, by using public transport you do not only save the environment but also loads and loads of money. If you skip transport altogether and walk by foot or use your bike instead, you even get a free workout in. Sounds good, huh?!
PLASTIC BAGS SUCK: For real though. When I started working as a cashier I realized how much plastic bags go out every single day. And what do you do with them once you get home? Nothing, you throw them away! That’s why I try to always bring my small cloth bag with me when I know I’ll be stopping by a shop. When we go out for our weekly grocery shopping tour we always bring huge plastic bags (like the ones you get at IKEA) to carry home our food. Why would I even want to pay for a stupid bag just to never use it again?
GO VEGGIE: I think by now we all now how much of a difference going vegetarian/vegan makes when it comes to sustainable living. But honestly, you don’t have to turn into a full-on meat hater. If you try to squeeze in one or two veggie days a week that’s definitely a good step in the right direction too ;)
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS: Growing up I was taught to always turn off the lights when I leave the room. Why would I stop doing that just because I’m a grown-up now? Turning off the lights when you don’t need them helps you with saving energy money and saves the environment (plus it makes the whole flat a little more romantic, duh).
UPCYCLE: Ever since I discovered that upcycling is a thing I’ve been hooked. Since then I started storing my seeds and dried fruits in empty true fruits smoothie glasses, bought a Voss mineral water bottle to refill and bring to uni with me (never having to spend money on plastic water bottles again definitely wins here) and I try to reduce my food-waste by freezing all the things right before they go bad. FYI: Very ripe bananas are perfect for nicecream!!
What do you do to live more eco-friendly? Or, do you even care about saving the world?
