Writing has always been a big passion of mine. When I was little I used to dream of becoming editor of a big magazine but with age the realization came that it’s not as easy and glamorous as it appeared to be in the movies and I decided to head into a different direction. After graduating from school, starting university and realizing how much I am drawn to writing and language I now kind of managed to start living my dream… as a freelance writer!
Granted it’s not my full-time job and I wouldn’t be able to completely live from it just yet. In December I decided to quit my retail job and headed into self-employment. So now I’ve been a full-time student plus blogger and free-lance writer for almost 5 months and even though it’s sometimes a real pain in the ass it’s also the most fulfilling thing I ever started. And ever since I started pursuing my dream the question I’ve been asked most is, “HOW do you manage to do it all?” Because YES it’s stressful, it’s exhausting, weekends are basically non-existent and I sometimes am now even more broke than I’ve been before, where I could always rely on my paycheck coming on the 1st of the month. So today I’m going to talk you a bit through my time-management habits and my life as a freelance writer and blogger.
My day as a freelance writer
My focus in life right now still is on finishing my university degree. But a girl’s gotta eat, right? So I also need to fit in some hours of work every now and then in order not to starve to death. At the moment my paycheck mostly consists of freelance assignments as writing articles for different magazines and online sites plus the revenue that I make from my blog-baby. And let me tell you one thing, I don’t make millions – far from it really. But I’m genuinely SO happy that I hardly ever complain about that. Who needs money anyway.
Of course, it is really hard to give you an exact schedule of what I’m doing all day since every day is different and I can plan it how I want to. But I usually try to get up between 7 and 8.30 and then check my emails, do admin stuff and start writing articles in the morning before heading to University around lunch-time. The afternoon usually is reserved for studying or homework (especially during exam time!). In the evenings I usually reserve some hours for social media, and my friends. I feel like having somewhat of a routine calms me down and makes me so much more productive so I try to stick to it as closely as I can. That, however, isn’t always that easy due to my very very weird university schedule this semester.
So how do I manage to get it all done?
I’m a huge fan of to-do lists and would literally be useless without them! I usually have 2 lists: one for the week, one for the day. On Sunday evenings I roughly schedule my week and write down every thing that needs to be done until the weekend. And every morning right after getting up I make a new one for the day, where I write down every single thing that needs to be done. And yes I also write down things like “eat, shower, clean the flat” because ticking these things off makes me feel more productive and motivated. However, I won’t go into more detail about my to-do lists here because I already published a post on productivity and getting organized a couple of weeks back. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. I know this sounds easier than it is. And YES, of course, I sometimes also don’t feel like working or want to quit university because I’m so frustrated. But then I tell myself that it’s only a couple of weeks of studying until I’ll have my life back and when I give everything I can I’ll be really proud of myself. What a cliché right?
Working as a freelance writer really is both a blessing and a curse. There are days when I tend to stress myself out until I’m emotionally drained and just want to lie around and eat all the food. What I do then is take a day off. Because that’s the luxury of working from home. I’d rather have one day off where I completely relax than a couple of unmotivated days where I don’t manage to get stuff done. So if you ever plan on becoming a freelance writer you gotta know that it is the most amazing thing in the world but also needs a hella lot of self-discipline as there is no-one responsible for your paycheck other than yourself!
Here are some of the things I do in order to get stuff done during the day:
- Get up early and GET DRESSED as if you were heading into any other office
- Clean your desk and get rid of unnecessary things piling up on it because this will only distract you from working
- Take some time off when you feel stressed out – meet some friends, go for a run, read a book, TREAT YOURSELF
- Be aware that you won’t have a regular income and always keep an eye on your finances!!
- Write to-do lists and try to stick to them as good as possible
- Put on some relaxing/non-distracting/motivating music
