Hotel Review: Biwak Canna Palustre, Millstättersee

hotel review, travel

Last weekend, my friend Lisa and I, were invited to spend a night in a Biwak at the Millstättersee. When I shared a few impressions on my Instagram account, I got a lot of questions regarding the Biwaks and staying in one. So I thought I’d compile a little hotel review for you – Biwak edition.

I had already experienced how wonderfully relaxing staying in one of the seven Biwaks at the Millstättersee is last autumn, when I surprised my boyfriend with a little getaway to Carinthia for his birthday. Back then I didn’t really take any pictures because I fully embraced their “phones-off” philosophy and immersed myself in the surrounding nature, quiet and alone-time. So, of course, I said yes when I was asked whether I would want to come back and test one of the other Biwaks for my blog.

The Biwak Canna Palustre was the Biwak I initially wanted to book in autumn. Unfortunately, it was already fully booked when I got around to purchasing. Back then we opted for the Biwak radura al lago and absolutely loved it. Basically, everything I am saying here about the Biwak Canna Palustre also applies to the other one I stayed in, as they are catered to quiet similarly. In short: I think it doesn’t really matter which one you go for, the idea in general is absolutely amazing on its own.

Biwak Canna Palustre – an oasis embedded in reed

So last weekend my friend and I checked into the Biwak after arriving by train from Graz in the late afternoon. We checked in at the hotel and were brought to the Biwak. When we stepped out of the car we immediately were stunned by the tranquillity and serenity surrounding the Biwak. It is located right at the shore of the lake, embedded in reed and features a super cute little terrace for cozy dinners and breakfasts out in the open in summer.

Dinner we ate at the hotel. For breakfast, however, we were surprised with a little picnic basket at the Biwak. It was delivered right to the front of the door at 8 a.m. (our requested time) and was filled with freshly baked goods, a cheese platter, loads of sweet and savoury spreads, coffee in a thermos flask, (soy) milk and a fruit juice. We spread out our breakfast on the tiny table in the Biwak and comfortably enjoyed a breakfast in bed. So chill.

For your breakfast and dinner basket you can talk to the hotel catering to the Biwak if you have any allergies, wishes and/or demands. I’ve made the experience in both Biwaks that any wishes will be catered too. We didn’t want meat and demanded soy milk instead of regular milk for example and both wasn’t a problem at all!

“An escape from reality, a place to be alone together—in complete unison with nature”.

Hiking the slow trail and relaxing at the Badehaus

After we fuelled up on the delicious regional and seasonal breakfast and packed our bags, we headed out for a fun little slow trail hike through the snowy forest. All around lake Millstatt there are amazing slow trails, which invite to hike, wander and take in the quiet of nature. The path we took was only 3,6 kilometres long and led through the forest and along two little forest-lakes. Exactly what I needed after being stuck in the grey city all January.

After getting in a bit of exercise, we then explored the Badehaus in Millstatt for the rest of the afternoon. The Badehaus is absolutely stunning and I have loved coming here ever since I first discovered it a few years back (with me originally being from Carinthia!). So we spent the rest of the day basking in the saunas, watching the snowfall outside, swimming in the infinity pool overlooking the lake and stuffing our bellies at the restaurant at the Badehaus.
